NOVA IMS expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Professor Luís Fernando Gomes de Sousa Lobo, Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa between 1995 and 2003. In tribute to his memory, the current Rector, Paulo Pereira, has declared two days of academic mourning, on 24 and 25 January.

A Full Professor in the fields of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology, Luís Sousa Lobo left a lasting mark on the institution through his strategic vision, contributing significantly to its growth and academic standing.

During his term as Rector, the development of the Campolide Campus project stands out as an important step in organising and enhancing a central space of university life. This period was also marked by the University’s participation, under his leadership, in the national and European debate surrounding the Bologna Process, launched in 1999.
