Detalhe da Notícia

The study "Prospective analysis of the impact of the growth of large companies in Portugal", conducted by Professor Bruno Damásio with a research team from NOVA IMS, and in collaboration with the Associação Business Roundtable Portugal (ABRP), intends to explore which benefits may result from the existence of more than 150 large companies in the country. To this end, there are several indicators under analysis, such as the impact on GVA (Gross Value Added), productivity, average national wage, exports and tax revenues.

In the first phase of the study, a descriptive statistical analysis was implemented, in order to examine and identify patterns on the relevant variables for the growth of large companies, while in a second phase econometric and predictive models were developed, with the purpose of demonstrating the importance of large companies, highlighting their impact on economic variables of interest.

Through the results it was found that, between 2016 and 2019, large firms had a GVApm (Gross Value Added at market prices) 10 times higher than an average firm, and in 2019, large firms were, on average, about 3.7 times more productive than average firms. Regarding investment in research and development (R&D) projects, it was found that the investment of large companies was on average 6 times higher compared to that of medium-sized companies between 2016 and 2019.

In terms of salaries, the conclusion was that large companies spent the most on their employees, with an average of 31 thousand euros spent per employee, which means that a large company spent 30% more than a medium-sized company and 70% more than a small company.

Participation in the conference "Querer e Crescer - Ideias para acelerar o crescimento de Portugal”

The results of the study were presented on March 20th, at the conference "Want and Grow: ideas to accelerate the growth of Portugal", organized by ABRP, and reveal that it is the large companies that stimulate national economic growth. The conference was attended by Bruno Damásio, Assistant Professor at NOVA IMS, as Keynote Speaker.
