IGF & NOVA IMS Conference: Sustainability & Good Governance

On April 12th, the Rectory of NOVA University of Lisbon hosted the 6th NOVA IMS & IGF Conference, which was dedicated to the topic: "Sustainability and Good Governance: New Perspectives for Auditing". The conference was attended by experts and opinion leaders in the field of auditing, including the Portuguese Minister of Finance, Fernando Medina. After the opening session, two panel discussion were held: one dedicated to Environmental, Social and Governance responsibility (ESG) and the other focusing on European Funds. The event proved to be a unique opportunity to discuss the current challenges and opportunities in the area.

The 5th Future Maker event, which took place on April 12th, was a huge success, attracting numerous prestigious national and international companies. Attendees were able to gain insight into the services, internships, and other opportunities offered by the 27 participating companies.
The event was an excellent platform for fostering professional connections and taking the next step towards a future career.

Alumni NOVA IMS Insights: Round Table Data Engineering

On April 18th, an engaging Round Table, organized by the NOVA IMS Alumni Association, took place at the Noble Hall of Colégio Almada Negreiros. The event featured a panel of experienced data engineers who discussed several key industry topics, including the tasks and responsibilities of data engineers, the differences between working directly for clients or in consultancy, recommended technologies for junior data engineers, the importance of data science concepts for engineers, and warning signs to watch for in data engineering projects. Attendees were able to gain valuable insights from the panelists diverse perspectives and experiences, which makes us consider the event a great success.

NOVA IMS students awarded in ERPsim Competition

On April 20th, a competition was held where 18 teams, from a total of 11 international universities, participated in a management game developed by HEC Montreal University. Using the ERPsim simulator, the game simulated the management of a company that produces and sells cereal flakes, with the goal of trying to maximize profits whilst in competition with other teams. The NOVA IMS team, composed by the students Ana Carolina Silva, Anabela Florêncio, Beatriz Custódio, Bruno Santos and Marco Galão, won the 3rd place!
Congratulations to the students and good luck for the next competition taking place on July 8th!

NOVA IMS projects highlighted at the ADN Awards

The first ADN Awards Gala took place on April 21st, at Nova SBE in Carcavelos. NOVA IMS was involved in two of the three winning projects, specifically: "The implementation of the Open School Model at the University" and "FIT4FUNDING". The Open School Model project was developed by NOVA IMS, represented by Professor Vitor Santos, and ENSP (Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública), and focuses on promoting quality education in the STEM area, as well as encouraging collaboration among teachers, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals. The "FIT4FUNDING" project, on the other hand, was developed among the science management teams of FCT NOVA, NOVA IMS, NOVA FCSH and NMS, and consists of a training program that aids researchers who wish to submit applications to European funds. NOVA IMS was integrated in the project through the participation of the executive manager of MagIC, Cristina Oliveira.

Information Systems Seminars image

Information Systems Seminars

During the month of April, new sessions of the Information Systems Seminars have been held, each with the presence of a renowned IT Company.

  • On April 12th, Nelson Luciano, who leads the Digital Natives and VC/Startups space for Google Cloud, gave a lecture dedicated to Cloud technologies;
  • On April 19th, Cristina Lobo Matias, Data & Technology Transformation Service Line Leader; Rita Marques, Data Science & Analytics Consultant; and Tomás Cerejeira, Cognitive Consultant, all joined as speakers on behalf of IBM;
  • On April 26th, a new session of Information Systems Seminars took place, with the presence of Siemens as the guest company, represented by Luísa Soares de Melo, who holds the position of Product Owner.

These Seminars are integrated in a Curricular Unit of the bachelor's program in Information Systems but they are, nonetheless, open to students of all cycles and to the general public, and registration is not mandatory to attend the seminar.
