Major-General João Carlos de Bastos Jorge Gonçalves
Deputy Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force and Head of the Office of the National Aeronautical Authority. He holds a degree in Military and Aeronautical Sciences from the Portuguese Air Force Academy and has logged over 3,000 flight hours in aircraft such as the F-16, AlphaJet, T-38 Talon, and Epsilon.
Throughout his career, he has held several leadership and operational roles, including Commander of the 201 Squadron – “Falcões,” Air Base No. 5 (Monte Real), and the Azores Air Zone. From September 2023 to September 2024, he served as Commander of the European Union Training Mission – Mozambique.
He has served as an advisor to the Military House of the President of the Republic, held a position at the European Union Military Staff in Brussels, and represented the Portuguese Air Force in the F-16 modernization programme across international forums. He has also completed several specialized training programmes in Portugal, NATO, and the United States in areas such as flight safety and accident investigation.
Over the course of his career, he has received multiple decorations and commendations. He is married, has two children, and lives in Óbidos.
