What is the Dashboard Challenge?

The Dashboard Challenge 2024 is an initiative of the "Dados ao Serviço de Lisboa" partnership, promoted by the Lisbon City Council (CML), NOVA IMS, and the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL).

This challenge aims to stimulate the creation of knowledge about the city of Lisbon, taking advantage of the data available on the Lisboa Aberta portal and the capabilities of data analysis and information visualization, through dashboards built by university students.

The dashboards to be developed should represent innovative ideas that translate into creative visualizations that help improve knowledge about the city of Lisbon.

Objectives

  • Promote data literacy through the involvement of youth and universities;
  • Develop data-driven approaches to support the planning and management of the municipality of Lisbon, based on the concept of smart and sustainable cities;
  • Value the use of open data, 
  • Utilize data and Information Technologies (IT) to promote factual knowledge.

Participants

  • The contest is open to students enrolled in the 1st cycle of higher education during the academic year 2023/24;
  • The dashboards can be presented individually or by teams of up to three members;
  • The members of each team may be enrolled in different educational institutions;
  • The appointment of a team representative is required.

Please note that this event will only be conducted in Portuguese.

Applications

Registrations are free of charge and carried out exclusively through sending an email with the subject "Participation Dashboard Challenge 2024" to the email address: novacidade@novaims.unl.pt.

Evaluation and Pre-selection

The dashboards are subject to evaluation and pre-selection following specific criteria, with ten chosen for the final in-person presentation to the jury.

Only dashboards with an evaluation of 9.5 or higher out of 20 will be considered valid for pre-selection.

For more information on the evaluation and pre-selection of applications, please refer to articles 6 and 7 of the regulations.

In the assessment of the dashboards, the jury will consider the following criteria:

  • Originality and level of innovation of the idea;
  • Creativity;
  • Relevance of the idea;
  • Sophistication of the analysis;
  • Potential for use.

Jury

The jury consists of:

  • Representative from CML;
  • Representative from ISEL;
  • Representative from NOVA IMS.

Final Event

  • Presentation of the finalist projects:
    • The defense will be exclusively in-person and conducted by the members of the participating teams;
    • The participating teams are required to prepare a presentation with a maximum time limit of 5 minutes.
  • Evaluation and decision-making;
  • Awards ceremony.

Timeline

  • Registration: from March 1st to April 29th, 2024, until 11:59 PM;
  • Dashboard submission: from April 1st to May 20th, 2024, until 11:59 PM;
  • Pre-Selection of Applications: from May 21st to May 27th, 2024;
  • Final: June 3rd, 2024.
